We recently took a trip to Europe. It began over a discussion with our Danish friends we met in Brazil over Facebook Messenger. It was one of those, “what do you call this dessert in English” conversations that led to, “hey our dessert is better, you should come visit us in Denmark and try it”. I don’t think our Danish friends realized that we had quite the accrual of air miles and hotel points. They do know us well enough to know we are almost always up for anything.

A few weeks later, we found ourselves landing at the Dusseldorf airport in Germany. We rented a car. Then we began our adventure.
The first leg of our adventure began in Amsterdam.

We were jet lagged, and drove 3 hours through Germany and the Netherlands. We drove into Amsterdam, and after driving circles several times, we figured out where to park the car, and dropped our bags off at the hotel. We found the drive to be easy, however finding a place to park in Amsterdam was difficult.

It was too early to check in, so the first thing we did was the canal tour of Amsterdam. We cannot recommend this enough. It’s touristy but it is a great way to get to know the city and do some people watching.

After the canal tour, we took a nap. For dinner we had to try our first Rijstfafel restaurant. This is Indonesian food that Amsterdam is famous for. We followed this by having a pint in a pub.

Other great things we did in Amsterdam include visiting the Van Gogh Museum and the Rijks Museum. We also had to stop in and try some local cheese while we were out for a walk. This is a great city for walking. You can just wander around and come across so much to do and see.

Amsterdam was a fun and lively city, but after several days, we decided to get out of the city and head to Kinderdijk to see the famous windmills. Unfortunately the tulips were not blooming. It was also raining, but the views were still amazing.

Have you visited Amsterdam? If so, please share with us your favorite activities in this beautiful city!

Please stay tuned for the rest of our European adventures. Next stop is Belgium where we learn about beer, visited beautiful cities, learned about history, sampled chocolates, and ate the best waffles in the world!
